We specialize in providing strategic foresight and innovation services for local governments looking to navigate the uncertain terrain of tomorrow.
Our Approach
Our team believes in the infinite possibility of the future. But to take advantage of those unrealized opportunities, we have to take action today. That’s why our approach keeps practical insights and actionable strategies at the heart of our work.
- We believe in a collaborative approach that involves working closely with your team to develop a deep understanding of your organization and its goals.
- We understand that each local government is unique, with its own set of challenges and opportunities.
- We understand that every dollar counts and taxpayers won’t tolerate unnecessary risk.
- Our approach is focused on delivering tangible results that help your organization succeed in a rapidly changing world.
Our Process
We use a creative synthesis process that lives at the intersection of art and science.
Drawing inspiration from proven methods like design thinking and foresight competency, we ensure our approach is grounded in both innovative thinking and practical application. Our three-fold process guides projects from ambiguity to realization, bridging the gap between imagination and actual implementation.
- Phase 1: Exploration
This is an exploratory research-oriented phase, intended to bring clarity to the project, reduce ambiguity, and uncover key insights. We begin by framing the project and clearly defining the focal issue while immersing ourselves in the current landscape. This involves specifying project goals, mapping the contextual intricacies and key areas of interest, and exploring historical content. Once this initial round of activities is complete, we dive into deep research, thoroughly exploring the topic at hand using proven research methods. Through systematic search and synthesis, we curate key trends and subject them to rigorous evaluation, uncovering valuable insights, opportunities, and risks.- Key activities: journey mapping, heuristic analysis, teardowns, kickoff workshops, current analyses, ethnographic research, expert interviews, surveys, focus groups, horizon scanning, driver synthesis
- Phase 2: Incubation
This phase is about using the intelligence generated during the exploration phase to deliberately cultivate new ideas. By questioning underlying assumptions, scrutinizing current trajectories, and tapping into unrealized possibilities, we create space to reconceive our ambitions and reframe our problems. This involves dissecting obstacles, brainstorming solutions, and developing alternative views of what the future holds. After conceptualizing multiple divergent paths forward, we draw on sensemaking and facilitation activities to develop innovative concepts and preferred visions of the future.- Key activities: scenario development, implications mapping, visioning, conceptual development, prototyping, goal-setting
- Phase 3: Actualization
This phase is about translating conceptual work into specific practical, action-oriented tasks, converting ideas into reality. We accomplish this by developing prototypes, offerings, or artifacts that align with the overarching project vision. This process allows us to validate ideas, test their viability, and fine-tune plans for implementation. After pressure-testing concepts, we craft resilient strategies that serve as a roadmap to achieving long-term goals, providing the guidance needed to thrive in a dynamic environment.- Key activities: backcasting, strategic planning, prototyping, reporting, user testing, futures workshops
